The Twinkie Perspective.

I don’t know about you, but I love sweets. Cakes and cookies are my favorites and although I don’t buy them anymore (except for the occasional celebration), I will occasionally make my way down the cookie aisle at the grocery store just for old times sake. Most of the time, I’m looking to see if there are any new lower calorie options out there but every once in awhile I’ll glance at some of my old favorites and ask myself if I miss eating them. It’s interesting because 9 out of 10 times, the answer is no. I don’t miss the calories and I certainly don’t miss the guilt. Don’t get me wrong, I still indulge in sweets from time to time, but when I do, I usually stay away from these goodies and go for something that is portion controlled and/or has less additives and chemicals.

A few Saturday’s ago, I was perusing the cookie aisle when I glanced at one of my old favorites - Twinkies. Oh, how I loved those little things. I must have been rather bored because I started wondering..”What if the Twinkie could talk. What would she say?” The story below was the result of my day at the grocery store. I hope you enjoy.

“You love me. I’m that delicious, soft, cream filled cake that’s lurking in your kitchen pantry; thinking about me makes your mouth water and gets your mind racing. There are even times that you think I’m your best friend. I know this because you come to me when you’re happy, when your are upset, when feel stressed. Friends do that for each other, don’t they? I find it interesting that you rarely ever reach for me when you are hungry and want something quick to eat; that’s not what I’m here for, or at least that’s my perception.

I think my purpose here is to make you feel better. I help soothe your troubled woes.

I sit on the very top shelf of your pantry in an empty box, all alone - waiting for you to come and get me. This big hollow box was once full of other Twinkies, but over the last few days the others were taken away and quickly devoured. There were times over the last few days when having one of us wasn’t enough for you. Instead of unwrapping just one, you’d grab two or three of us to help quench the emotional turmoil you were feeling; you’d shove us down your throat quickly as if eating faster would decrease the number of calories you were consuming or diminish the embarrassment of cheating on your diet again.

That must have been a really rough day for you.

Last week, my fellow Twinkies and I, were enjoying our view from the top shelf at the grocery store overlooking the other Hostess treats, cookies and Little Debbie snack cakes. When you saw us on the shelf, your eyes lit up and it looked like you hesitated putting our box into your cart. You must have justified it by telling yourself we were going to be a ‘snack for the kids.’ That’s what I’ve heard other folks say. Yet, when you unpacked our box from the grocery bag, you quickly whisked us into the back shelf of this dingy little closet, effectively hiding us FROM the kids. You’ve been indulging in our sticky sweetness everyday since.

You think no one knows, but I do.

I know you feel guilty after you scarf me down, but in that moment, i’m the most delicious thing you’ve ever tasted. Although you eat me so quickly sometimes that I wonder if you even taste me at all.

I love that I have that power over you.

I also love that even though I’m tiny and weigh less than 2 ounces, I have tight control of you. I’m such an itty bitty little thing, but I make you feel powerless.

I often wonder why you let me have this power over you. It doesn't make sense to me, but it doesn’t have to, I guess. It just has to make sense to you.”

It’s amazing how we allow food to have such power over us. There are many things in our lives that we cannot control, but what we DO have total control over what we choose to eat.

Bee healthy. Bee happy.
